What Is Lean?
Lean manufacturing originated from the Toyota Production System that was implemented after World War 2 to help keep the Japanese automaker competative with the automotive giants in the United States. TPS is a combination of many different concepts rolled together into a process the ensures continuous improvement and quality. This is what most lean programs are based on today, however many large companies have implemented their own lean manufacturing programs that differ from the original Toyota Production System.
The basic idea is to eliminate waste and build quality into the process. There are generally 8 wastes that are targeted depending on the system being used

1. Defects,Rejects and Rework
2. Motion/Ergonomics
3. Transportation
4. Over Production
5. Over Processing
6. Inventory
7. Waiting
8. Waste Of Human Potential

By reducing these wastes a company can function with more efficiency. Lean transformations are considered to be a "journey" since there will always be waste in the process that can be eliminated. It is also sometimes refered to as "continuous imporvement" for this same reason.

Lean also incorporates zero defects and 100% quality to the customer. The concept of "stop to go faster" highlites issues that create problems in your production. This concept is very different from the way most companies operate. But the philosophy is that you will pass not defects down stream and when a problem exits it will be dealt with before production resumes.

In a nut shell, lean can be descibed as producing for the customer exactly what they want, when they want it, in the right quantity (no more, no less) with 100% quality and doing so with the least amount of inventories possible. This definition seems realtively simple, and it is. The concepts behind Lean thinking are a lot of comon sense tied together with a lot of dicipline to do what needs to be done. It is a real shift in thinking from the way most companies conduct business and implementing many of the concepts can be difficult. However the end results will make your company more competative and able to compete in global markets.
